“Catios,” the Latest Must-Have for Cats

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Cat owners are just as silly as dog owners, it seems. Like their canine counterparts, cats can now ride around in special baby buggies, wear cat-sized clothing and live the life of a ridiculously pampered animal.  As reported in today’s New York Times, the new “gotta have” article for cats is a “catio” or cat patio.  New Yorkers are merrily screening in their apartment balconies and decks so their cats can enjoy the outdoors without their owners having to worry about them falling to their deaths on the streets of New York (whatever happened to those nine lives, anyway?). Some are even adding wire mesh runways that encircle trees and allow cats to “roam” the outdoors.

It must be hard to be a self-respecting cat these days. Give me a mouse-catching barn cat any day

“Drain Cat” Becomes World’s Smallest Breed

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Move over, Tinkerbell (Paris Hilton’s chihuahua).  Now there’s a kitty who can ride in your mama’s purse.

Raised up from the streets of Singapore, one of the newest recognized cat breeds is also the world’s smallest. The Singapura is a short-haired cat with wide-spaced eyes and large, radar-dish ears. Tommy Meadow, a cat breeder who specializes in Burmese and Abyssinian cats, brought three “drain cats” to the U.S. in 1975. Since then, he’s “perfected” and standardized the breed. The Cat Fanciers Association recognized Singapuras as a breed in 1982. Males weight just 6-8 lbs., and females 5-6 lbs. People who like “cute” are sure to go for these brown cats with skinny little tails.

Let’s hope they don’t suffer the same fate as the thousands of chihuahuas that ended up at animal shelters when the craze for a portable pooch died a natural (and deserved) death.

Toenail Clippings

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

One of the area pet stores had a feline toenail clipping event last weekend.  I’ve never cut the toenails of a cat, and I don’t think I want to.  We had a cat who was raised outdoors on a farm. When Midnight came to live us, he used the lilac bush in the backyard to keep his claws in trim.  Shredded the bark on a regular basis, but Mom never had to worry about the furniture. I can’t imagine holding a squirming cat long enough to nip the pointy little ends off its claws.

I had a Labrador that would allow me to do just about anything, including clipping her toenails. Although she whined and acted worried, she never withheld her paw. The dog who followed her wouldn’t allow anyone to touch her feet, even when she got balls of ice between her toes on a winter hike. The vet had to trim her toenails when he knocked her out to clean her teeth.

The Current Dog doesn’t seem to have any qualms about people messing with her feet, or her teeth, for that matter. But holding still is another matter. It’s worth the extra money at the groomer’s to get the job done without hassle.

Things are happening at Stone Mountain Pet Lodge

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

It seems like there’s always something going on at “The Lodge,” as we call it. The month of March is no exception.

SMPL will exhibit at the Twin Cities Pet Expo March 6 and 7 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. You’ll find us in Booths 419 and 421. There’s plenty of activity to behold, including dock-jumping dogs, frisbee-playing dogs, and dancing dogs. (You can even take a class to teach your dog how to dance, but you have to pre-register to bring Sam to the show with you.) New this year is a Pet Look-alike photo contest, and a rabbit agility exhibition. The show runs 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Saturday and 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Sunday. Come on down!

Head over to The Lodge on Saturday, March 20, for Canine Health and Wellness Day, sponsored by the Bearnese Mountain Dog Club of the Twin Cities. It’s free and you don’t need a BMD to attend. Hours are 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

And now, from the “sicko” department…

Would the cruel idiot who glued the cat to the highway in Minnesota please step forward? There are a bunch of people who’d like to take turns using you as a punching bag, at the very least.

If you’re not familiar with this story, a woman was traveling along Interstate 90 in western Minnesota on December 18, when she drove by a cat lying in the middle of the highway.  She turned around to check it out and found it glued to the pavement, but still alive.  She took it to the Second Chance Rescue Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. A volunteer at the center took the cat home, but the rough treatment he’d received prior to this was too much for Tiny Tim, and he died just before Christmas.  The center has started a reward fund for information about the incident that leads to a conviction. At last count, it had reached over $12,000, and actor Ken Wahl had pledged his Golden Globe award from the TV show, “Wiseguy.”

We’ll leave it to other blogs to invent creative punishments for the person or person who glued poor Tim to the road. But we’ll join their voices in calling for just punishment for their acts.

Another great story I ran across at MSNBC Today about a golden retriever that saved three tiger cubs and her owners’ business.
